You can learn from users
without getting on a call.
For founders and researchers who want the insight and not the small talk.
The call is a delivery mechanism, not the value
Talk to users. Everyone agrees. What nobody says out loud is how much of a thirty-minute call is not user research: the scheduling, the “sorry, one second, my camera”, the weather, the mutual acquaintance, the wrapping-up. Strip that out and you are often left with six or seven minutes of the thing you actually needed.
That leftover is not a small talk problem. It is a format problem. Synchronous video is an expensive way to collect seven minutes of considered opinion from someone who would rather be doing their job.
The best answer someone gives you is rarely the first thing they say. It is the thing they say after a pause.
Some people think better without an audience
If live calls drain you — the eye contact, the improvising, the performance of being personable while also taking notes — that is a real cost, and it quietly shapes how much research actually gets done. A lot of good product thinking never happens because the person who would do it dreads the calendar invite.
Asynchronous does not mean lower quality. Written questions are usually better questions: you draft them, cut the leading ones, and get the order right. Nobody rushes their answer because they can hear you breathing. And you can listen back twice.
It is easier on the other person too
The people you most want to hear from are the ones least likely to give you thirty minutes. A five-minute voice survey they can answer at a bus stop gets replies from people who would have politely ignored the scheduling link.
What you give up, honestly
You cannot chase an unexpected thread in real time. If someone says something surprising, you have to send a follow-up rather than ask right then. For exploratory, wide-open discovery, a live call still wins.
For everything else — validating a direction, understanding a switch, hearing how people describe the problem in their own words — the voice survey gets you the same signal for a fraction of everyone’s time. Use both. Just stop defaulting to the call.
