CONCEPT & USABILITY TESTING

Product testing where people think out loud

The useful part of a usability test is the muttering. Written feedback throws all of it away.

First reactions do not survive a text box

When you show someone a new concept, a price, or a redesigned screen, the valuable moment lasts about ten seconds — the unguarded reaction before they compose a considered opinion. Ask for it in writing and you get the considered opinion, which is the part you could have guessed.

Ask for it out loud and you get the hesitation, the “hmm”, the sentence that starts twice. That is the signal a moderated session is expensive to buy, and it turns out you can collect it without a moderator.

Unmoderated, but not unattended

Write the prompts in the order you would have asked them, drop the concept description into the helper text under each question, and let people work through it at their own pace on their own device.

Mix question types freely: a multiple-choice question for “which of these would you pick”, a voice question for “why”, and a text-only question where typing is genuinely the right answer.

Test with the people who will actually use it

Panel-based testing platforms give you strangers who match a demographic. That is the right tool for some studies and the wrong one for testing a change with the customers you already have.

Personal links go to named people, greet them by name, and tell them the test takes four minutes. No panel, no recruitment fee, no waiting for a fielded sample.

START FROM THESE

Product testing questions worth asking

Six open questions is roughly four and a half minutes of someone’s time. Copy these straight in and edit them to sound like you.

  1. What do you think this is, in your own words?
  2. What is your first reaction to it?
  3. Who do you think it is for?
  4. What would you expect to happen if you tapped that?
  5. Does anything here confuse you or feel out of place?
  6. What would you expect this to cost?
QUESTIONS

Common questions

Is this moderated or unmoderated testing?
Unmoderated. People work through your prompts on their own device at their own pace, speaking their answers. You get the think-aloud commentary without needing to be present.
Can I test a design or a prototype?
Put the link or the description in the helper text under each question and ask people to react out loud. The recording captures what they say while they are looking at it.
Do you provide testers?
No. This is for testing with people you already have — your users, your customers, your waitlist.
